A new blog can feel tidy for its first few posts. Then the archive grows, related guides drift apart, and readers reach the end of an article with nowhere useful to go.
AI internal linking can help you sketch connections before that happens. The output from this workflow is an internal link map: a small spreadsheet that pairs source pages with useful destination pages, explains why each link belongs, and records the anchor text for a human editor to approve. AI proposes candidates; you decide whether each connection genuinely helps the reader.
You need a list of published and planned articles, a short summary for each one, and a spreadsheet. No paid SEO platform is required for the basic workflow.

Start with reader paths, not link quotas
An internal link connects one page on your site to another page on the same site. Its practical job is to help someone continue a task: learn a prerequisite, inspect an example, compare an option, or take the next step.
That definition matters because a link count is a poor starting point. Adding three links to every post may create a neat spreadsheet, but it can also produce irrelevant detours. A recipe article does not become more useful because it links to three loosely related recipes. The destination should answer a question that naturally appears at that point in the source page.
Google’s documentation on crawlable links recommends descriptive anchor text and explains that the words around a link provide context. The same documentation also cautions against forcing links into every sentence. That is a sound editorial rule even when search is not the main concern: a reader should understand where the link goes before clicking.
Use four relationship types to describe a possible connection:
- Prerequisite: the destination explains knowledge needed for the current task.
- Next step: the destination helps the reader continue after finishing the source article.
- Supporting detail: the destination expands one point without interrupting the main guide.
- Alternative path: the destination solves a related problem for a different situation.
These labels keep the plan focused on reader movement. They also give AI a more useful assignment than “find similar keywords.”
Build the internal link map before asking AI
Create one spreadsheet row for each proposed connection. Separate observed facts from suggestions so an uncertain AI match cannot masquerade as an approved edit.

A planned page can appear as a destination, but label it clearly. Do not insert a public link until the page exists at the intended URL. Broken placeholders are worse than a temporarily incomplete map.
This worksheet is for bloggers with a small or growing archive. A site with thousands of URLs, complicated faceted navigation, or a major migration may need crawling tools and technical SEO help. The spreadsheet is still useful for editorial decisions, but it is not a replacement for a technical site audit.
Give every article a clear job
AI needs a compact content inventory, not a dump of every full post. Give each article an ID and describe its role in two or three sentences.
For every published or planned page, record:
- title and URL or planned slug;
- publication status;
- primary reader and task;
- scope: what the article covers and deliberately leaves out;
- one prerequisite the reader may need;
- a likely next action;
- current internal links, if known.
The “leaves out” field is surprisingly useful. Two pages may share many words while doing different jobs. Scope notes help the model avoid treating them as duplicates.
If your summaries are inconsistent, clean them before link analysis. Run the seven-step AI internal linking workflow
1. Inventory published and planned pages
Begin with 10 to 30 closely related articles. A small batch makes mistakes visible. Give each page a stable ID so every suggestion can be traced back to your sheet.
2. Normalize the reader task
Ask AI to express each page’s job as “Help [reader] do [task] under [condition].” Review these sentences yourself. A vague task such as “learn about gardening” will produce vague links.
3. Identify reader transitions
For each source page, ask what a reader may need immediately before, during, or after the task. This produces candidate transitions rather than keyword matches.
4. Match transitions to real destinations
AI may now compare each transition with the supplied inventory. Require a destination ID, relationship type, reason, and evidence. “No useful match” must be an allowed answer.
5. Inspect the source passage
A page-level match does not prove there is a good place for the link. Read the live source article. Find a sentence where the destination answers a natural follow-up question without pulling the reader away too early.
6. Draft the sentence and anchor together
Do not paste an exact-match keyword into an unrelated sentence. Rewrite the sentence so the link belongs grammatically and the anchor describes the destination. Preserve the meaning of the paragraph.
7. Approve, implement, and check
Reject weak suggestions. Add approved links in WordPress, open the updated post, click each link, and confirm the destination, anchor, and surrounding sentence. Record the decision in the map so the next audit starts with accurate information.
Prompts for finding and placing useful links
Use the first prompt to generate candidates from your reviewed inventory. It deliberately allows an empty result.

Worked example: a five-post gardening blog
Consider a hypothetical balcony-gardening blog. The input contains no real analytics or private information.

A raw AI response suggested linking G03 to G02 because both mention containers, and G03 to G04 because both mention herbs. Those pairs are plausible, but the explanations are too thin. Shared nouns do not show when the reader needs the destination.
The revised map makes the transitions explicit:

The rejected G01 → G04 suggestion matters as much as the accepted links. A technically related page can still be the wrong interruption for a reader who has not planted anything yet.
For the tested G03 → G02 pair, the initial model sentence was: “Before starting, read our container guide here.” It points somewhere, but “here” tells the reader nothing and the sentence does not explain why the detour helps.
A human-edited version is clearer: “Before adding soil, [choose a container with reliable drainage] so excess water has a way to leave the pot.” The destination is predictable, the placement is timely, and the surrounding words explain the connection. The exact wording still needs to match what G02 actually says.
Write anchor text that prepares the reader
Good anchor text is descriptive in context. It does not need to be long, stuffed with a target phrase, or identical every time.
Compare these options:
- Weak: “click here”
- Weak: “read more”
- Awkward: “best balcony herb container drainage guide”
- Clear: “choose a container with reliable drainage”
- Clear: “check the weekly watering routine”
Read the entire sentence aloud. If the anchor feels bolted on, revise the sentence rather than swapping synonyms. Also check the words immediately before and after the link; they help readers understand why it is present.
Avoid linking the same destination several times in one short article unless each link serves a genuinely different need. Do not crowd headings, lists, or opening paragraphs simply because those locations are prominent. The Google SEO Starter Guide frames links as a way for users and search engines to discover related resources, but it does not provide a magic link count that fits every page.
Where automated link suggestions fail
AI sees only the material you provide. A title-and-summary inventory can miss nuance, obsolete passages, existing links, redirects, noindex decisions, and pages that are planned but not published.
Common failure modes include:
- matching repeated words instead of reader needs;
- inventing a destination or section that sounds plausible;
- suggesting a link to an unpublished URL;
- sending readers backward when they need the next step;
- recommending several destinations that answer the same question;
- writing anchors that overpromise what the destination contains;
- placing links in passages where the source article should answer the question itself.
Do not let AI edit dozens of live posts automatically. A wrong internal link is easy to create and tedious to detect later. Keep the map as a review queue, then make controlled edits in small batches.
Internal links also cannot repair a weak destination. If the target page is outdated, thin, or unclear, refresh it before directing more readers there. They do not guarantee crawling, indexing, rankings, traffic, or any business result.
Review the map before editing WordPress
Use this checklist for every approved row:

Check five to ten edits at a time. That pace is slow enough to catch a bad rule and fast enough to improve a young archive steadily.
A small map is enough to begin
Start with one topic cluster and map the paths between its published pages. Approve only links you can defend with a specific reader question. Then add the accepted links, test them, and update the sheet.
The useful output is not a dense web where every post points everywhere. It is a short, maintained list of connections that make the next step easier to find. Once that first cluster works, reuse the same relationship labels and review process for the next part of the blog.
